Death

Villa Nobel in San Remo, Italy, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Alfred Nobel lived here during the last few years of his life. He passed away due to a lingering heart ailment and a stroke on 10 Dec 1896. By then his parents, all his siblings - two elder brothers and a younger brother - had passed away. He had not married. At the time of death, in the house, with him were only his servants who did not understand him speaking in Swedish. Source: nobelprize.org.

Directive in Will

Alfred Nobel had directed in his will that upon his death, his veins were to be opened and competent doctors called in to sign the death certificate. The body was then to be cremated. This directive was due to his inheriting from his father, a fear of being buried alive. The Italian doctor who had been taking care of Alfred Nobel was not surprised by this directive in the will. The veins were opened during the embalming process. During the process ethyl nitrate and several other chemicals were injected into the body. In certain circumstances ethyl nitrate can become explosive.
